BETWATTLED
It's not rude, honest!
Although betwattled sounds rude, it's not. It meant confused, distressed, bewildered, stupid. The rather genteel version in Cumbria was betrattlt. This was recorded in Yorkshire in the 19th century:
"Ah's fairly betwattled and baffounded."
From Cumbria, there was this in a verse about a character called Gilpin (1866)
"An' lasses whillyliltit out as they hed been betrattl't."
I can find no definition for the fabulous word whillyliltit. Anybody knows what it means, drop me a line.
