BADGER'S BAND, (Hampshire, mid-19th century)

The clashing of kettles, pans, in front of the house of an obnoxious person; a rural form of punishment for notorious offenders.

How about this for a quote from 1860:

"For wife-beaters, husband-beaters, and men guilty of certain flagrant breaches of chastity . . . our good Hampshire folks reserve the punishment of 'rough music', or the badger's band."

The good people of Hampshire wouldn't have sat back while one of their neighbours was being beaten. They would have been out with the pots and pans making an unholy racket. Good on them. Bring back the Badger's Band, I say!
